One of the most distinct signs of NE England is the Angel of the North. I thought it was ugly the first time I saw it...but she has grown on me. I think I even want a painting or picture of her to take with us after we leave England one day. She is very near the side of the highway just south of Newcastle. Any time we head to Newcastle we see her (she's huge, so she's hard to miss)....and the boys have to point her out every time.

We got a car this week. Ben passed his UK driving exam (!!!) and his PhD advisor lent us his car while he is on sabbatical in New Zealand. Yay! We decided to trek to Newcastle for a little trip to IKEA with our newfound freedom. :) On the way home we decided to actually go visit the Angel. She's built of steel on top of an old coal mine site -- how fitting for this area.
