I am cavewoman, hear me roar!

Ben and I are still chuckling over this one. This afternoon we had 2 extra boys over for lunch.--they are British (this is essential to the story). After church I threw a tray of turkey nuggets and Smiles potatoes in the oven...then I cut up several carrots. I sat the 4 boys down to lunch with their choice of mustard or ketchup. After the second round of nuggets the younger of the visiting boys looked at me and said, 'Why are we eating with our hands?' He informed us that if they were eating this meal at home they would be eating with a fork and knife. I told him I'd happily get him utensils if he wanted. He replied, 'No thanks, I want to eat like a caveman!'

Seriously, Brits seem to eat EVERYTHING with a fork and knife...and apparently nuggets and 'chips' aren't finger foods in England?!?!? :)

Ha! I think it must be a European thing. I totally get it now why everyone was staring at us in Paris eating at McDonalds with our hands! Americans are cavemen for sure.

But brits, at least, would eat with their hands at McDonalds etc. Of course, they don't actually provide cutlery, but we're used to it. (On a trip to the US in 1984 my dad apparently asked for cutlery in McDonalds, much to the embarrassment of his son...)

Oh - knife and fork, not fork and knife. Dunno why, it just is ;-)

Of course, for a long time our main experience of chips [fries - though to me fries are a particular type which you get at burger places] was with battered fish, which is more tricky to eat without cutlery.

And the usual accompaniment for a meal like nuggets is still baked beans in tomato sauce, which really *can't* be eaten in your fingers.

Thanks for the British wisdom on these things...even after living here for a year we're still ignorant to many British *norms*. Next time I'll have to pull out the baked beans and the cutlery! :)

Ben just quoted me on this post on his own blog...except he corrected my 'fork and knife' to 'knife and fork'. No faux pas for him! :)

I love this story - I'm just picturing these little boys with their british accents - too cute! Do they eat hot dogs, pizza, hamburgers, etc... with cutlery too? We really are cavemen!
