Ben and I are attending a
Burns Supper this weekend at a Durham Uni professor's home. We are definitely looking forward to this traditional Scottish experience. I don't know much about a Burns Supper...just know that it is a tribute to the Scottish bard, Robert Burns, and that it involves
haggis and lots of toasts (that each of us will be giving). Dr. Telford passed some books along to the guys and Ben brought one home. I thought I would study up a bit this morning and write my little toast -- I'm doing a toast to the Land of our Adoption (Durham). As I was reading through this book all about Burns Suppers, I ran across this information on haggis. I knew that it was some type of sausage...I pick it at Tesco quite frequently for people's orders. But I think I would have been better about eating it if I didn't know this...
The haggis as Burns knew it and as we know it today is a tribute to the Scottish gift of making something of excellence out of cheap materials. Its ingredients are heart, lights and liver, beef-suet, oatmeal and onions minced together and sewn into a large stomach bag of a sheep.

This is definitely information I should have avoided. I think I will have to focus on the word 'excellence' when the haggis is piped in to our table on Saturday.

It is actually quite good - at least the times that I have had it. The only way I can describe it as a really good version of meatloaf. It should be a fun night.
I do love meatloaf. Now I'll just keep 'excellent meatloaf' in my head. :) The way Dr. Telford is going on about this, I suspect it will be really nice haggis. Looking forward to the experience anyway...
Monte says "all of Scottish cuisine is based on a dare!" (as taken from So I Married An Axe Murderer)
I remember it being very salty which is good because then you will be thirsty and you can wash it down quickly.
What a fun experience! Share your toast with us!
I'll have to share the toast after Saturday. I'm sure I'll have a good post to share about the night.
That is so dang nasty! seriously! Although i'm sure our "hotdogs" aren't much better. Make sure to post your toasts - can't wait to hear!
You just have to think of it as Extreme Sausage (I think it's delicious).
Have you tried Black Pudding? ;-)
