This week we started looking at plane tickets for our move this summer and were not encouraged by the prices we were seeing. As June-August is the peak travel time, normal tickets (~$1000 a person!!!) are about double what I paid to travel in February. And one-way tickets are only about $25 or $50 cheaper than round trip! Even flying to London and renting a car, which Heather thought to do, would only save a few hundred total.
However, when just poking around on the internet, I saw that some trips from NY to Dublin, Ireland were pretty cheap (aerlingus.com). So I tried Dallas to Dublin and found tickets that were about $450 a piece. Then for the whole family, we could fly to Edinburgh for just ~$200, which is just about 1.5 hrs from Durham. So we're looking at close to $2000 vs. $4000 for plane costs!! And we should be able to get Amer. Airlines freq flier miles since Aer Lingus is one of therir partners. We'll just rent a car in Edinburgh and keep it for a week or so to get settled, and then make a decision about car or no car.
