No parties...just pancakes
Tuesday here was not Mardi Gras, but Shrove Tuesday. To most locals it is just called Pancake Day. There was a pancake display on the end of one of the aisles at Tesco, and I did pick a ton of pre-made pancakes for the internet shopping orders at work on Monday. Co-workers kept asking me if I was going to make pancakes the next day. I replied that I was...but that we were going to have them American-style. You see, here in England, they are *nearly obsessed* (IMHO) about not mixing sweet and savoury items at a meal. So things like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (with the pb as savoury and the jelly as sweet) are seen as disgusting. You should have seen faces when I tried to explain sweet potato casserole at Thanksgiving! Anyway, here, it seems, the pancakes are eaten more as a dessert with fruit, maple syrup, or ice cream syrups put on them and rolled up. I told them we were going American-style with pancakes and bacon!!! A perfect blending of 2 cultures if you ask me. :)

Wish we could come over for Pancakes and Bacon - yum! I have to admit that I must be more English as i'd rather not mix salty and savory either. I like my PB sandwiches plain just like my Pancakes! Poor Derek slathers Panckaes with Peanut Butter AND Syrup!
Love you cous. Enjoyed the S word too! Way to go on being the hostess of the after superbowl party too.
I used to think bacon with pancakes sounded disgusting (Im British/Australian).... then I had it and yum! Now I live in America and its the only way I have pancakes. You need to educate them. They'll love you for it!
I think your idea about the British fear of avoiding sweet and savory is spot on. We have met reactions from mild curiosity to an almost vehement reaction against it. And it is such a staple in so many diets, or at least throughout the Americas, American, Canadian, Mexican, all of which rely on that a decent amount. And instead the traditional toppings for their pancakes are lemon juice and sugar! Weird....
Wow, I wish we could have bacon!
It's been a while since I've come round these parts (travel, sickness, ya know)... but I love that family picture of you guys-- it's great! And the boys look so blonde-- have they always been so blonde?!?
Great to catch up with you guys again!

We also celebrated "Pancake Day" on Tuesday. We done it ever since we left the U.K. However, it's not the crepes that we had in Oxford, but Bisquick with sausage and eggs! I even found a recipe where you put vanilla in the mix and it was great!
