Maybe it was the wardrobe...

that got us into thinking we should read The Chronicles of Narnia with Elam. I mean we DO live in England and have wardrobes in 2 of the bedrooms -- not exactly a huge leap...even if our IKEA specials don't quite give the image of the wardrobe that the Pevensies used to find that magical land.
Anyway, shortly after we came to England we borrowed The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe from the local library. Ben read it to Elam at bedtime...about a chapter a night. E loved it and wanted to hear more about Narnia, so I read books 1, 3, and 4 (LWW is #2) with Elam while Ben was busy getting lots of his own reading work done last fall. E received the Narnia box set for Christmas and he and Ben have made their way through the rest of the series together. They just finished The Last Battle this past week.
So, now The Hobbit has been checked out of the library and I suspect Ben and E will start on a new set of adventures tonight.

That's great- I LOVE reading out loud... watching the looks on Ethan's face is priceless! We need to start up on the Chronicles, maybe next year once Baxter is closer to being able to understand at least parts of it.

I read out loud to the kids in the class I used to work in. They were 9-12 year olds and I realized then how adults usually let reading TO their kids go after they learn to read on their own. I vowed to keep it up with my own kiddos (and I'll do it in a classroom setting again if I ever make it back to one) as long as they'd let me.

And with Ben's love of reading, it's a perfect "time with Dad", too.

doug seems to remember that aslan was a possible name for elam while in the womb ... is he crazy?

he says he's looking forward to the day that he can read those to his boys. :)

It was on my list of names. Ben wasn't too sure about it...and it just got worse when we mentioned it to Will. Will thought it was hilarious and didn't pass up the chance to ask how "little Asy" was doing. :)
