I'm sitting on the couch going through our mail the other day when Elam walks in and says, "Mom, I don't think I am going to tell you what I got on my spelling test today." Of course that got me curious! I finally convinced him to let me in on the secret...he told me that he got an "N". In Kindergarten and 1st grade classes the grades are E (Excellent), S (Satifactory), N (Needs Improvement), and U (Unsatisfactory). Since he is used to getting E and S+ on everything, he was a little worried about our reaction to this announcement. I reminded him that it was only one N out of all his work, shared a similar story from my childhood, and then told him that he could always tell us anything. I'm not sure how much he listened to all that because when Ben came home he was hesitant to tell him about it, too. :)
We studied his words that night together...we had actually been a bit lax on making him do that. He got an E on his spelling test redo the next day! So, if you need to spell chicken, cherry, or catch...give Elam a call.
