I met with John (Barclay) late on Friday afternoon. We discussed my background a little and main priorities for this term: language study--particularly German, classes--just to sit in on, and reading. I was a little surprised that he would have me start with early 20th century books instead of some current overview since my background with Pauline studies is so poor. However, Albert Schweitzer authored a key text in the area I'm researching, so John wanted me to start from the beginning (so to speak) and work forward. So I'll be reading Paul and His Interpreters and The Mysticism of Paul the Apostle (which is the key text) over the next two weeks. I've read most of the second one, but it was so I could spit out my thesis proposal. Now, I'll actually read the book for comprehension, etc.
In the related vein of work, please continue to pray for Heather as she looks for a job. She's applied for a couple of positions at the university with no positive responses yet. The search will really begin in earnest once Grammy leaves (in just over a week).

Ben, I always knew you had a thing for lawyers!! Schweitzer on Paul sounds exciting...okay maybe just interesting.
Hope all is well!

Look's like the fun is about to begin! I almost envy the fact that you won't be really taking any classes. That means you won't have to sit under crazy professors. I've got one prof. over here at the University of Dallas who is driving me nuts! I don't want to sound mean when I say this but being learned does not make one a good teacher--that's a whole other skill set.
On the plus side though, for folks like me who need the "external motivations" of papers due and reading assignments, etc. done, the classes do help.
Incidentally Ben, I can only be there for the AAR/SBL on the 18th (I think it goes up through the 21st). I'll email later about it.
