I've always wanted to know how to whistle loud--like with your fingers in your mouth. Now that I've had extra time on my hands I figured I'd hunt for the answer on the web. After reading through a few websites that make it way too complicated, I came across this explanation: "My technique is to touch my index finger to my thumb like I'm making a circle. I then press the joint between the two back against my tongue (just under the tip) until the tongue is in a wave shape. With the fingers inside my mouth, I lightly press my lips down over them. Blow with quite a bit of force. Make small adjustments until you produce a whistle." I suppose the other websites provided a little extra help understanding that the wave shape is just my tongue bent back against itself and that I need to practice for 15 min or so a day for a week before it becomes easy.
Heather is now happy that I'm not having to practice daily (which drove her crazy). I can now call Elam when he's out running around with the neighbor kids and all that. Plus the limitless other things you can do with a good whistle. I'm very excited. Now that I've conquered that, I'll have to find some other skill to master before school starts at the beginning of October. Otherwise, I've just been filling my time by trying to read through the NT in Greek, so my Greek skills will be up to snuff. I think I've gotten about 1/3 of the way through so far.

P.S. I just heard these weird noises coming from downstairs, which I couldn't figure out what they were. It turned out that Heather was so moved by my blog entry above that she had to start practicing for herself. : )

Congratulations on your new-found skill and good use of your time. Now I will have to print your directions and go home to practice.
This made me laugh ... and I thought that's just like Ben to have a weird random desire, pursue it and accomplish it. Hats off to Heather for putting up with your practice in the house.
I was dying laughing when i read this - t's such a "Ben" thing to do and post :) Congrats on the new ability! I'm jealous - this would definitely come in handy on the playground when I forget my whistle. I've been keeping up with the bogs - you guys are the best bloggers!!
