English to American

Here is the start of our English to American dictionary…helpful terms that we have run across (most several times) since we have been here.

Chips = French Fries
Crisps = Chips
Biscuits = Cookies, Crackers
Sweets = Candy, Dessert
Veg = Vegetables
Motorway = Highway
Bin = Trash can
Bin Liner = Trash bag
Hoover = Vacuum
Let a house = Rent a house
Lounge = Living room
Garden = Yard
Mobile (said “moe-bile”) = Cell phone
(to) Ring = (to) Call
Trolley = Shopping cart
Boot = Trunk (of your car)
Bonnet = Hood (of your car)
Well done = Good job
Brilliant = Good Job
Right = OK
Cheers = Thanks, bye!
Vests = Undershirts
Pants = Underwear
Trousers = Pants

*** We are working on the boys with the last 2 in particular…don’t want them to have an embarassing moment at school if they refer to their pants. Well, I’m sure it won’t take long for our 6 year old to remember the English term and still talk about pants all the time…total boy!
