Looking forward to a budget-friendly Christmas

Now that Ben is a student (again) and I can officially be called unemployed (since I am looking for a job), we have been a little more serious about our budget. I don't have a bank account here (what a pain!) since Ben is on an international student account. We pull out cash each week that is considered our house money...that is what I use for groceries, home decor, etc. I realized a few weeks ago that I should just buy one stocking stuffer for the boys each week coming out of that money and that will hopefully provide for a nice amount of Santa stuff when Christmas comes around. A friend invited me to a semi-annual "nearly-new" rummage sale that a local children's non-profit puts on here in Durham. I ended up with 2 huge bags of clothes, books, games, and a few toys for 21 GBP. Most of it is in pretty good shape, so I plan to wrap up the majority of it for Christmas. One lesson I have learned over the past few months is that children can definitely live with far fewer toys (and even books., dare I say that?!?!?). A room full of that stuff does not lead to happy children. We have benefited from libraries and the generosity of others, but even still I want to keep it all in perspective. I am looking forward to this budget-friendly Christmas...and I am wondering which week we will choose to eat beans & rice and sandwiches for several days so that we may enjoy a few Christmas decorations. :)

I'm totally with you ... we have so much stuff and only been at this "kids thing" for three years. I did find some fun toys at the thrift store that I'll wrap up for Christmas this year, too. And, now that the kids' bookshelf is full -- I've told myself that if we get more books, we donate some. :)
