Well, it finally arrived. The long-awaited metal detector is here. Elam received his Amazon package last weekend and was happy to explore the backyard with it and a few neighborhood friends. I noticed after a while that they just decided to hold it up to the hinges on the gate and other obviously metal things...there's just something about making it beep! :)
Through this waiting though, it has made Ben and me question the "craziness of Christmas". This was really the ONE thing that he wanted...he loves science and this is his passion. It seems like he received a "bazillion" things for Christmas (that he's actually had in his possesion to play with) but when he was asked about his favorite Christmas present he said the metal detector every time. We'll have to think hard about how we do Christmas next year. It makes me wonder if all the money spent would be better used in aiding them to pursue their passions in the future...college funds, savings bonds, etc.??? Just a thought...we're still working through it.

Wow! I am so glad that it finally arrived -- I can hardly wait to hear a story about a kid with a metal detector finding some old English coins...maybe hidden by pirates (or Celts)...
Yep, we're right there with you! Christmas was crazy ... too many things to unwrap and it just seemed empty in the end. I think we'll be thinking along the same lines in the future. Let us know the rest of your thinking ...
